Review: True Grit & Black Swan

True Grit

This movie looked awesome. But, looks can be deceiving. I will tell you that I never saw the original movie, I'm not a fan of "westerns"... or Matt Damon. I am a fan of Jeff Bridges, the Coen brothers, and Coen brother movies.

They let me down. I felt like I was watching a slightly more gritty Disney movie, with the over-used narration, under-used profanity, with the epic "good guy turned good" ending. I wanted GRIT. I got blah.

The story was fine, the acting was good, the movie was OK... but it wasn't my idea of a Coen brothers film. I wanted another No Country for Old Men, where you wanted to look away from the screen but couldn't because it was too awesome. I wanted them to do Jeff Bridges another good one, and put him in as significant a role as in the Big Leboskwi. I just wanted more.

In reality, I'm only one voice. And it seems, from the extremely high Rotten Tomatoes rating, the masses completely disagree with me. I'm only one voice... but this voice is saying that the movie was lame, uninspired, and over-done. I wanted something completely different than what I got.

My grade: B-
Oscar worthy? If it were up to me, no. But we'll see.

Black Swan

I absolutely loved Black Swan. I don't like psychological thrillers much, because I'm a wimp and get freaked out easily, but because the "freaky" part of this movie didn't really happen until about 3/4 in, I survived.

I went to see Natalie Portman act. And the girl acted. It is truly amazing how someone with such a small body can use it in such large ways. She was graceful, she was deadly, she was beautiful, she was frantic, she was confident, she was shy, she was bold, she was timid.... she was everything she needed to be and more.

And can I just add how amazed I was at Mila Kunis? Wow girl! Where have you been hiding?

I think the buzz of this movie was well deserved. It was a sight to see, and I want to see it go far during this year's awards season. I am kinda mad at its Rotten Tomatoes rating... it seems low to me (and in my opinion should definitely not be lower than True Grit's rating). But, hey it's still a decent score.

My grade: A-
Oscar worthy? Natalie Portman. Mila Kunis. Wow.
