Review: 127 Hours

Sunday, February 13, 2011

The Academy Awards are 2 Sundays away... and I'm slowly watching all the Best Picture nominees:

Best Picture

The Fighter
Inception
The Kids Are All Right
127 Hours
The Social Network
Toy Story 3
Winter's Bone

The Kids Are All Right has been at the top of our Netflix queue for about 2 months now, and a "long wait" is still the status. I have absolutely no idea what Winter's Bone is, or where it came from, or if it's out on DVD yet (I'll look into that in a little while). Today, though, I went and saw 127 Hours

Yes... that's the movie about the dude that cuts his arm off when a rock falls on him while he's rock climbing. Starring James Franco (who is up for Best Actor at the same time as hosting... which is cool).

Here's the trailer for you:

If you haven't sen this film yet because you're afraid of watching him cut his own arm off, let me tell you: you can cover your eyes for that brief 5 minutes. I did. It was intense. But besides that 5 minutes, the film isn't about cutting an arm off... but of finding something to live for. For Aron... it was a vision of a future son, a future family.

The movie probably won't win Best Picture. The King's Speech and The Social Network were better movies. But it's up for quite a few more nominations including: Best Film Editing, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song),  & Writing (Adapted Screenplay). I don't know enough about these categories to say whether or not it will win... but I will say this:

The use of music made the film.

And that's one of the few ways you'll win me over to your film every time. The music was incredible. It was perfectly edited. Worked seamlessly with the plot. Moved the story along. Calmed the audience when it needed to... and freaked us out when it needed to. It was one of the best examples of how to properly use music to make a film that I have ever seen. I'm looking at the soundtrack as soon as I finish this post.

The critics over at Rotten Tomatoes agree it was a pretty darn good film...

So, if you want to see a fantastic underdog movie... go check out 127 Hours. You definitely won't be upset that you saw it.

My grade: A
Oscar winner? Probably not. But I'm glad its nomination gave me an excuse to see it.

And, yes, I saw Justin Bieber's Never Say Never this weekend too... and I promised a review on that... but 127 Hours was more relevant. My short review? It was cute, extremely entertaining, and I'm glad I saw it. Perfect for families, especially families with girls. I liked that the film made fun of itself at times without loosing any credibility. I'd give it a B- and no, it won't be up for any awards. But I don't think that's what they were going for.

  1. I did a post about this movie on my blog. This movie was done very well, I really enjoyed it! The only part that made me flinch was when he hit the nerve! OUCH!
