Review: Wicked

Sunday, March 13, 2011

Thanks to an amazing Christmas gift from my mom, C & I found ourselves at the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio,TX, a few weeks ago, watching the play Wicked. It had been quite a while since I had gone to a live theatrical performance, much less a Broadway-caliber play! So it was definitely something to look forward to, and it definitely turned out to be as good of an experience as we had hoped it would.

So first things first: Amy, did you like the play!?! people ask. Why, yes I did. It was surprisingly funny. My only complaint was the high(er) pitched notes that protruded from G(a)linda. C actually made a comment after the show, that his brain is programmed to tune out women's voices when they get to a certain pitch, and as a result he missed complete verses in songs. But, besides that, we thoroughly enjoyed the entire performance. I can see how Idina Menzel would be perfect in the role. (And I just figured out Kristin Chenoweth was Glinda... which is also perfect). Makes me almost wish I'd seen in on Broadway way back when. But our cast was wonderful, too. So really that's not a complaint.

Ok, moving on. Item number 2: Amy, isn't the Majestic Theatre gorgeous!?! people ask. Why, yes it is. It is so pretty, in fact, that the don't allow photographs when you walk through the front doors. Luckily, I've been there quite a few times, so I knew what to expect. But it was C's first time there, and he was impressed. (Which is hard to do!) I highly suggest trying to get into the theatre if you're ever visiting San Antonio. Again, one complaint: the place is super old, and as a result it has those really old, narrow staircases with no hand rails! We were only on the 2nd row, but I had to hold onto people's seats in order to not tumble and fall. (Have I mentioned I'm a klutz?)

Since we went to a Sunday matinee show, there were a large number of elderly women and moms taking their daughters out. In other words: there was a surprisingly few amount of men at the show. And every man there was being drug by his wife. The guy next to us immediately bonded with C when they both started to doze off at the end of the two and half hour first act. It was amusing. (I myself will admit that the first act was a little long.)

But that brings me to the next topic. C, do you recognize this song? I asked during "Defying Gravity" (I've made him watch and listen to Glee, so I know he has). His answer: No. But I now understand Amy Adams opening monologue on SNL better. Typical. But at least he was paying attention. And in case you have no idea what I'm now talking about... here's Amy's monologue from the show in April:

So, as you can probably tell, it was quite a pleasant afternoon. It was so much fun, and I'm really glad I got to go see it.

I'm actually watching "Defying Gravity" right now on YouTube and am still getting chills. So, I think I'll leave you with it. It really defines the show, and is as good as everyone says it is. (Start at about 1:00)

(And sorry, because of all the copyright rules, I couldn't find a stage performance that I was allowed to embed. Hopefully this gets the point across ♥ )

So thanks, mom, for a fun day!
