Review: The Help, in its various forms

Tuesday, August 30, 2011

I didn't have a difficult time deciding which book to read this month. I, like everybody else, quickly ran to the nearest bookstore (or in my case, Amazon) to get my hands on a copy of The Help.

The buzz surrounding the book is difficult to ignore, as The Help has already been deemed a "classic" by many.  And, to my surprise, I actually enjoyed the book as much as everybody else said I would. [I have a tendency to be more critical when the "masses" say I should like something.] It was a beautifully written, yet simplistic view into the ugly Southern discrimination of the 1960s. And it was personal. When I was reading it, I could feel honesty and fear reaching across the pages.

When I read Kathryn Stockett's biography at the end of the book, I wasn't the least bit surprised to learn that she was raised the same way the women in the book were. It was her honest sentiment that captivated my attention and gained my respect.

My grade: A

I, then, like everybody else went to see the movie a few days after reading the book. And that's a while different story...

Is it commercialy successful? Yes. The Help has topped the box office for two weeks straight. But where the book succeeds the movie falls short. There is no subtlety in the film. Everything is either explained in great, outlandish detail or simply ignored. Relationships between individuals are forced and unnatural. I kept waiting for the meat of the story, but it never came. Instead, I felt like I was eating a McDonalds hamburger insted of the steak I was expecting.

Did I enjoy it? Sure. I laughed and cried at times. But I just wasn't compltely satisfied.

I love how The Hollywood Reporter explains my let down feelings:
There are small moments in the film though that make you long for a movie that is not so deep-dish serious and self-conscious, a contemporary movie that could take advantage of the viewpoint of a half century to look at the past [...]  But, no, the film falls too much in love with its vintage cars, period hairdos, quaint customs and ubiquitous cigarettes. It lingers a tad too long on the Colored Only signs and Confederate flags. It makes its points with set design and camera movements rather than fully explore the never-ending puzzlement of human malice and ignorance.

I can't help but wonder if the producers sacrificed artistic success for box office success, how it could have been different, more significant. But that's what you get when Disney takes over and sets out to make an end-of-summer, family-friendly, non-action film. Chances are when you see it, you'll like it. But it's not going to make an impact on the industry. It's not going to change anything. Except the size of Emma Stone's resume.

My grade: B-
DVD worthy? Not for my collection.
Awards worthy? Viola Davis may get a nod, but that's a long way away.

What I miss most about the weekend...

Since getting in the habit of posting my weekly Project 365 pictures up each Friday, I've really begun to appreciate my life more. Which is something I've needed to get in the habit of doing.

Was every day perfect? Absolutely not! But forcing myself to take a picture each day - and then going back to look at it - makes me realize that even on those bad days, something worth noting happened.

So here's what went on this week...

Went to the beach with my bestie Mer & C - stuck my toes in the sand and drank cheap wine - in a rental house. It was perfect! You can see more pictures of that weekend adventure here.

I got my football season tickets for the 2011 Aggie Football season!
That's enough to make anyone ecstatic for the week ♥

I had a meeting with Enterprise at work & got a squishy car out of it.
Not super exciting. But it's still enough to make me smile :)

And it rained. Really, really rained. We needed it and it was awesome!

And I finally saw The Help this week! I went out to a 9:30 showing with a bunch of girls from the office. We got frozen yogurt beforehand, and then talked our way through the previews. It was such a fun night!!

(And my review of both the book & the movie are coming!)

This weekend we're keeping it low-key, because... Next weekend is the first Aggie Football game!!  What are your plans?

{Have a great weekend!}

PS -- For my new followers - I'll warn you in advance: I love me some college football (and as a graduate of Texas A&M University, obviously I love Aggie Football). I try to keep away from it too much on here, but as you can see for yourself, it slips through.

Summer 2011, A Time for Change, Pt 8: Motivation

Thursday, August 25, 2011

It's been a while since I updated you guys on my "A Time for Change" series. Mostly because there was nothing really to tell. Until yesterday.

I hit my first major goal!

I've officially lost 20 pounds during the 8 weeks or so of my little experiment. And I'm really proud of myself!! I have 30 more to go to reach my ultimate goal... so there's still a long way to go. But hitting the first major milestone is a big encouragement to me and is actually motivating me to work harder and stay more focused.

I had a sweet email a while back from Michelle, asking me what keeps me motivated. It took me a while to figure it out, but once I started typing my response to her the words kept flowing out of me. (And I want to say thank you to Michelle for asking me that question! It really got me thinking, and I apprecitate it!)

I wanted to share my response with you today, because I need to remind myself of it. Here goes nothing...

What keeps you motivated? Where do you find most of your recipes and do your shopping?

The short answer: I find my recipes from reading a ridiculous amount of blogs and cookbooks, I get my motivation from talking about my weight loss attempts with strangers and with friends and family - I believe being open about your struggles keeps you out of a fantasy world - and I set realistic goals which I write out and have taped above my scale in my bathroom as a daily reminder of what I'm trying to do.
But here's the long answer (after the break, because it's l-ooooooooo-ng)...

Say Something Nice

Wednesday, August 24, 2011

A few friends on Facebook have been sharing this video, and it just gave me such a big smile as I watched it, that I couldn't not share it with you too!

So here's my something nice: I hope everyone has a great day!

Pass along the love  ♥

What I'm Loving...

Week in and week out I'm amazed at how quickly Wednesdays come, and how excited I am for them! My appreciation and love for Pinterest (find me here) keeps growing - and seeing everyone's finds each week gets me excited to dive in even more. It's such a great way to see what others are loving and finding out in the big web-world!

I'm making it a point to avoid food Pins this week - even though I've found some amazing dishes over the week that make me salivate - so consider this non-food finds on the web... Enjoy!

I love this outfit, it's so perfect for fall...

And how cool would this adult tree house be, for hanging out and enjoying friends?!?

These shoes don't even need an explanation for why I love them so much!

I love this sentiment. It's been motivating me all week to do things I love, even if they're deemed "simple" by others.

I always wanted to buy an old church whenever I "grew up" and make a home of it. I nearly died when I saw this church-turned-home renovation! It's almost the house of my dreams ♥

And finally, I have to mention my favorite Late Afternoon outfit this week... I love the polk-a-dot shirt. So classy, and yet so effortless!

I hope you all are having a terrific week!

Top Chef: Just Desserts starts, and I can't wait!!

Makes me want to try all the desserts on my recipe list ...

Are you watching it tomorrow?

Fashion for a Tuesday: It's time...

For a new purse.

I'm not a multi-purse user (though I may begin to re-think that). I find one I like then use it until I get sick of it. And, that time has come, my friends.

As I was searching through my go-to sites (Antrho, UO, Target, Piperline), I realized the purses I was pinning to my Pinterest board were all the same: a brown leather messenger-style bag. (Guess I'm telling myself something here!)

Here are my top 3 favorites that I found:

(Lucky for the bank, 2 are from Target!)

How do you shop for purses? I need some help!

The end of summer was never so sweet...

Monday, August 22, 2011

I can't put my weekend into words. I had the immesurable pleasure of seeing my best friend Meredith for the first time in over a year - right before she goes back to Canada for another year. I could barely contain my excitement as C and I waited for her knock on our door Friday afternoon.

We've been planning this weekend for months, and dreaming about it since she left last summer. Skype phone calls and sent postcards just weren't enough after a while, and when the knock finally came we were thrown into a whirlwind of a weekend that involved everything a weekend with a long lost friend should involve. And, oh yeah, we went to the beach too!

Because my words will never be enough, here's some of my most memorable moments, which we can both relive together...

And, yeah, that is us totally feeding sting rays. Which I was awful at!

Sorry for the minor picture overload. It was all just so wonderful, I had a really hard time narrowing it all down to just this!

I hope you, too, had a wonderful weeekend! And I hope you have a fantastic week! Stay tuned for a giveaway coming up soon

Have a good weekend!

Friday, August 19, 2011

Oh man, I had such a fun week, with my guest posts and afternoon dance parties. It was also a super fun week outside of blog-land, too!

I got to go bowling last Friday...

And then I got to make these delicious things on Saturday...

And surprised my hubby with Peach pancakes on Sunday...

Monday started with Aggie football practice...

And Tuesday (our 6-year "anniversary" of sorts), the fun continued with a baseball game...

Wednesday, I got a car wash...

And last night I got to go see a community production of "Doubt",
which was fantastic!

As if all of that isn't already the makings of a great week, I get to see my bestie Meredith tonight for the first time in over a year!!!! We're spending the whole weekend together and it's seriously going to be fantastic! I can't wait!!

{Have a great weekend!}

I think I died and went to food Heaven...

Yesterday, I discovered the Tumblr blog: Food is Art.{This Tumblr blog was deactivated since I found it last night. Weird.... Guess I'll have to stick with Food Gawker. But that doesn't stop me from sharing these amazing finds!}

I can't even begin to say how happy this former blog makes me. I have to let these pictures do the taking for me...

Tiramisu Pound Cake With Chocolate Glaze

What I'm Loving...

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

Seriously, where does the time go? It's Wednesday again!

Here's what I've been loving this week...

  • Not sure how practical these are. But I just couldn't help but smile and pass the picture along...

  • One of my IRL friends is posting pictures of Texas A and M University, and I love the different angles she's found! I love browsing her blog, Every Good and Perfect.

  • Ok, so these could be gross. But they could also be awesome. I haven't ventured into the world of bacon and chocolate yet, and I really want to!

  • And finally, as promised, here's my favorite outfit Liz from Late Afternoon posted this week. She called it "retro glam"... and I love the whole thing!
