Blogging, a Tutorial: Vol. 7

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

I sat down this morning to publish a post I had already written, but something just wasn't clicking. It just didn't feel right... So through my shower and putting on my makeup, I was running other ideas through my brain. Over and over I went, trying to figure out how I could alter that post & make it click.

Then I just hit delete.

Because, minds change. Blogging isn't a scientific field. You don't have to always follow "the plan" - and sometimes you may not have a choice. Changing your mind is okay. Your followers would rather read something meaningful and heartfelt instead of something forced or calculated.

Stay flexible.
Stay open minded.
Relax.
Have fun.

Don't be afraid to just hit delete every now & then. Sometimes starting wtih a blank canvas is all you need to really be inspired and to really write something worthwhile.

I started Blogging: A Turorial as a way to celebrate my blog's second birthday. If there's ever a topic you want covered - or if you want to contribute - let me know! I'd love to talk to you ♥

Weekend Update.

Monday, October 29, 2012

Christian's birthday began on Friday and ran all the way through Sunday. We made a weekend out of it, and headed to Austin to celebrate properly. Between fancy bowling, late-night street pizza, dressing up as the kids from Moonrise Kingdom and getting to meet my sister's new boyfriend, I can definitely rank this in the top weekends of my life.

I just love weekends full of late nights and boozy hangouts.

And now I have a 4-day week, because we're heading to NOLA on Friday. Yay!

Have a Happy Monday ♥

Happy Birthday, Dear

Friday, October 26, 2012

Today is a happy day in our house, because today is Christian's 25th birthday

If you can believe it, it's the 8th birthday of his that I've been around to celebrate. Some of those birthdays are some of my favorite memories. I love celebrating his life! And I love being able to show him how much he means to me.

C is the biggest blessing in my life. I couldn't imagine a life without him. He loves me and is never afraid to show it. He makes me laugh. And he makes me proud everyday. He is hardworking, determined, and focused -- but always finds time to relax & enjoy life with me too.

So, honey, on this day I just want to say I am overjoyed to celebrate your life. Thank you for making it all worthwhile - and I'm looking forward to many more years together celebrating you. Happy Birthday ♥

We're heading out to 6th Street in Austin this weekend for a birthday/Halloween celebration. This year, we're dressing up as this. Can't wait to share pictures on Monday!

Have a wonderful, and safe, weekend!

On Marriage & Busy Weekends

Thursday, October 25, 2012

When we were first married, we set aside Sunday mornings for "business meetings" -- a time dedicated to making meal plans, discussing finances, weekly calendars, etc. It served such a great purpose and helped us keep an unified vision and alleviate any misconceptions or miscommunications.

Over the past 3 1/2 years, we've tried to keep up those business meetings, but they've moved to a more lucrative system. Some things that we used to have to discuss in great detail are running smooth now. Our priorities have changed. Our schedules have mostly leveled, and we've fallen into roles that are working. Plus, our color-coded Google calendar has been a marriage life saver.

But we still have them when we need to - especially when things get busy.

At the end of each meeting we look ahead to set the next date, if we can. And this past weekend, as we were sitting & sipping mimosas, we realized that this was our last weekend at home alone until December - and even at that we only have 1 free weekend before Christmas!

These full weekends would have totally thrown us for a loop 3 years ago, but now with experience we've found ways to stay organized and on the same page, even if we can't have our "traditional" meetings.

#1: Use Car Time Wisely.
Most of the next few weekends, we'll be in the car a minimum of 5 hours. Those close quarters are the perfect time to talk about plans and ideas and to stay on top of our lives!

#2: Keep it Simple.
I like to think about it as "one weekend at a time". If I simplify my tasks (like only cooking dinner 1 night that will feed us for 3) then I simplify my to-do list, which keeps stress away.

#3: Keep Google updated.
Google mail. Google docs. Google calendar. We use them all, and we have to just be dedicated to stay on top of them & make sure they're in order. Especially that calendar. I can't praise it enough!

#4: Be purposeful.
Between the crazy weekends, we have normal weeks. And if we use those times purposefully - getting quality "us" time in, taking care of house work/laundry, getting blogging done, etc. - we can fully enjoy our busy weekends without guilt of not doing something important.

#5: Forgive & Move on.
When busyness sets in, so does stress. And even if I follow all 4 points above, we're still imperfect and something will still set in to cause frustration. So it's important to remember to love C, forgive quickly, and move on -- that way we can enjoy our time out instead of being at odds with each other.

So as I head head into a month(plus) of busy weekends I'm dedicating myself to these little tips. Not only will they help keep my marriage pleasant, but it'll help me stay sane. (and have clean underwear♥)

Blogging, a Tutorial: Vol. 6

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

Last week's blog tutorial covered the social media that I use, what I use if for & some tips for each one. I didn't cover Pinterest, however, because I wanted to give Pinterest its own post.

Pinterest has completely changed the blogging world in the year (or so) of its existence. It is a great resource that has been poorly used by some, overused by others, and ignored completely by others. It has totally changed my online shopping experience (it's my "wish list" and where I go to search instead of Google or even Etsy). I find inspiration for my blog & home. And I've found some wonderful bloggers through Pinterest.

***
Here's a few observations I've put together over the past year+ that I've been pinning:

DO:
Use Pinterest as a place to find inspiration.
Pinterest's best quality is that it's inspirational. Whenever I have an idea, I love to browse through all those many pins & find examples of things done well. Or quotes worth reading. Or outfits worth trying out. The visual design of Pinterest is addicting and calming. Use it for inspiration. That's what it's there for.

Re-size the image.
I hate nothing more than finding a Pinterest picture on somebody's blog that isn't properly re-sized. Whether larger or smaller, you can re-size the picture, even outside of Pinterest! (Note: pay attention to picture quality if making an image larger.)

Here's 2 ways to re-size the image (for a 650 pt-wide blog, as is mine):
1) Easy: Use Blogger's "X-Large" cheat button.

X-Large automatically makes the largest dimension 640px. So it'll be either 640px tall or wide, depending upon if it's a horizontal or vertical image.

2) Harder: Manually change the size in HTML.

Delete the phrase - height="XXX" - in its entirety. This allows you to not have to worry about keeping the correct dimensions (aka: do math.) Now, just change width="XXX" to whatever size you want it to be. I use width="640" for all my images.

Promote others through pinning.
I love when Pinterest comes up in my traffic sources list. It means people are not only reading but sharing my images! It's a nice feeling, and one that most of us would enjoy. I love to promote other's blogs by using pinned images in my weekly "What I'm Loving" round-up. I've had many blogs & websites personally thank me for sharing their stuff, and that feels nice too ♥

DON'T:
Use Pinterest on every blog post.
If you're using Pinterst for every blog post, you may be missing out on your potential. While Pinterest is there for inspiration, it can also be used as a crutch. I found myself using an image from Pinterest in almost every post, and wondered why I didn't feel fresh or original! Now, I limit myself to only 2 posts with a Pinterst image a week... and it's totally changed the way in which I take pictures in my daily life and how I write. I'm more creative, more original, and enjoy what I've put out much more. The reader's response is better too.

Use an image without a source.
If the image you just re-pinned or posted on your blog doesn't have a source (or is "uploaded by user" and the "user" isn't you) ... STOP. Go delete that pin. Not only could you (not Pinterest) get in trouble, but it's lazy blogging. I love that Pinterest allows for easy image-sharing, but if we don't properly cite our sources the fun could be ruined. Don't be the cause of ruined fun.

Delete the source line under the picture.
This is a continuation of the idea above, but I despise Pinterest round-ups that just source "my Pinterest page". If you're making your pins into a collage, that's cool, but include the actual sources on your blog post. And if you're just copying the Pinterest code directly into your post, don't delete the source line. Leave it there. And if you're wondering why, read the point above.

**About sourcing: If you're on a URL that's using "page=2" you're technically sourcing the image, but if that image ever moves to "page=3" it'll no longer be on the cited page. Use the permalink for the image's page as opposed to the situational link. This is especially true on Tumblr & most blogs that have rotating material.

***
Find me on Pinterest

Other Quick Tips:
  • Centering the source line. If you change "float: left" to "float: center" you can center the source line. Quick cheat: in the edit HTML tab, CTL+F "left" and replace with "center". Done.
  • Make a Resume' board. Especially if you're in an image-intense industry (photography, design, architecture, art, etc.), make a Resume' board. Not only will your work be in yet another place for potential clients/employers to see, but it'll set you apart. I currently have 400 people following my resume' board. Which is more than LinkedIn has offered me.
  • Unlink your Facebook & Pinterest. No one wants to see everything you do on Pinterest in their Facebook timeline. It's almost as annoying as Farmville.
  • Participate in Oh How Pinteresting! link up with The Vintage Apple. It's a great place to meet new people & allows you to get all your Pinterest images on your blog at once.
  • Add a meaningful caption to your Pin. It'll help others find it. You don't want to be invisible online!
  • Fill in your Pinterest profile. Include your website, Twitter account, etc. It's just another part of your online portfolio & should help bring people to you ♥

Weekend Update.

Monday, October 22, 2012

Oh, I loved this weekend ♥

I was given an extra half a day when someone decided to call a bomb threat into Texas A&M, and the campus was shut down around noon. So I did what every other responsible adult does and watched 4 episodes of Gossip Girl from Netflix while eating California Rolls & baked Cheetos.

I am a classy one.

My weekend was mostly a lazy one. It's our last free weekend until December, so we made the most of it. We had some friends over for dinner, lit a fire. I made amazing chicken & waffles, and drank the last of my pumpkin beer.

Also, I drank mimosas. But at this particular point in my life, that's not really news as it's mostly assumed. And I'm totally cool with that ♥

I also made it back up to the office for a bit to set up my new frame wall. It's my goal to make my office calming, and it turned out exactly the way I imagined it would! And I'm so excited to get back in there tomorrow & continue learning about my new job.

Hope you had a great weekend ♥

Happy Monday.

My first week...

Friday, October 19, 2012

So, starting Monday, my "new" job won't be "new" anymore. It'll be a week old & that means I should be jaded about it just like everyone else is about their jobs, right? (Oh I hope not!)

But for this week, the job is still new. New computer. Awesome sunrise to welcome in the new week. New outfit combinations. New. New. New.

This week was gloriously tough.

I jumped into a job that I could have only dreamed of - and when it was actually staring in my face, daring me to begin, I froze a little of fear and excitement. I just kept thinking "they hired the wrong girl! I should quit before they fire me for incompetence...." But of course they didn't fire me, and I would never quit.

Instead I just had really long talks with my new boss about what my job looks like. I spent countless time on Google looking up basic tasks... And I remembered to breath & keep my cool.

A mid-week afternoon coffee date with C was definitely appreciated, too. He keeps me calm, cool & collected. He's my #1 cheerleader :)

Week 1 is down as of 5 o'clock today.

I'll spend the weekend not thinking about statistics and analytics, watching the Aggies BTHO LSU, and cooking the best tiny food party for friends ever. Those things I am an expert at ♥

Have a great weekend!

On Marriage & Liking Different Things

Thursday, October 18, 2012

Last night, as I was heading out to go to a local networking event, I asked C for the millionth time if he wanted to go with me. He, for the millionth time, said no.

And so, being a loving & respectful wife, I waited 30 seconds and asked again.

It's hard for me to fully accept the fact that sometimes, I'm going to want to do something different than C. We've been around each other since we were 16, so our beliefs, likes, dislikes, hobbies, (etc.) are so in line it's freaky.

But part of growing up is learning to like new things. And part of us growing up together, is learning how to deal with liking different things. I like social events, while C hates them. I've grown fond of Brussels sprouts and sweet potatoes -- he will barely touch them. I watch Gossip Girl and Keeping Up With the Kardashians. C barely acknowledges those are things. (Instagram is in a whole different ball park!)

It's been interesting to see us develop likes & interests separate from one another, even with such close proximity. I think it's something that's natural. But I'd be lying if I said I wish it weren't so. But, alas, it is. It's what we do about it that matters.

C's a wonderful guy who hasn't pushed too many of "his things" on me. He's respectful of my time & attention. He doesn't waste too much effort trying to force something, and I know if he's pressing an issue, it's because he truly thinks I'll enjoy it.

I, on the other hand, wish to share every-single-thing with him. Maybe it's a girl thing? But it can be a strain on our relationship. I talk 1000 miles a minute anyway. Add to that a topic that he doesn't care the slightest about, and you can see how quickly that can lead to an unpleasant conversation.

So, I'm writing this as almost a confessional. I wanted to open up & say that I realize that even when my heart's in a good place, the end result can be a negative one. I'm going to focus more on making moments with C count more - to be okay with our differing interests. To respect his time when he's not interested in something. And to really focus on things that we enjoy doing together when we're together.

That's not too much to ask, I think...

And over the years, my only hope is that we will continue to find new things we like to do together. Because those are always my favorite ♥

Blogging, a Tutorial: Vol. 5

Tuesday, October 16, 2012

Blogging, to me, is so much more than just writing and sharing my life -- it's an opportunity to be a part of a community. To talk to people you may have otherwise never met. To have discussions and parties and to learn things.

Luckily, social media has come along & expanded the blogging world into so much more. I am so excited that I have the privilege and opportunity to blog during this time of growing connectivity.

Today, I wanted to do a run-down of the social media I use, how I use them, and to offer some tips of what I've learned about each site...

***

Facebook [my page]

I use a Facebook page instead of my personal profile to promote Interpret As You May. It allows me to reach a "non-blog" audience, to share ideas and inspirations more often, and it allows me to interact with other blogs, brands and pages in a way no other platform does.

Some Tips:
  • Pick your page name carefully. Once you pass 200 fans, you can't change the name.
  • Cover picture and profile picture should represent your blog well. Be cohesive.
  • Don't have a service automatically post links to your blog posts (i.e. Networked Blogs, BlogLovin', etc.) Take the time to manually share your links on Facebook!
Twitter [my page]

This is my "on the go" conversation with the world. It's quick, convenient, communal, and allows for us all to be connected all the time. I don't have to have the cell phone number for a blogging friend in California. I can just tweet them, if I see something that I know they'll like, and voila! the fun is shared. It also gives you a voice & personality unlike any other platform.

Some Tips:
  • Make it public. Private accounts are fine, but not to represent your blog.
  • Interact! Don't just share links to your blog or Instagram pictures. Talk to others. Give compliments! Your favorite blogger will more than likely respond ♥ (Joanna Goddard of A Cup of Jo, Jamie Beck of From Me to You and Elise Larson of A Beautiful Mess have totally responded to me! And it just makes me love their blogs more.)
  • Don't have Facebook & Twitter linked. They're different sites with different purposes. If you have them linked, go unlink them now.
Instagram [my page]

As mobile phone cameras get more awesome, so does picture sharing! I love Instagram, because sometimes words aren't sufficient. It's dynamic and adds a level of personality, creativity and tangibility to you. It humanizes the person behind the blog, and makes others feel like part of your world.

Some Tips:
  • Don't just post pictures of your dog, face, or food. That gets boring.
  • Photo a Day challenges are a great way to meet others in the community.
  • Comment! Like! Share! Compliment! We're in this together, so let's have fun & build each other up in the process.
  • Don't #hashtag every little part of your photo. It's a turn-off.
Tumblr [my page]

While this is unto itself a blogging site, I use it as an image-intensive supplement to my blog. All my Instagram pictures are posted to my Tumblr page, and it's where I pass along graphs and animated GIF's that don't fit anywhere else. Pinterest has honestly taken me away from Tumblr in the past year, so I'm still trying to figure out its place in my "brand." But there's a great community to experience within Tumblr that's worth the effort to pursue.

Some Tips:
  • Tumblr is best (in my opinion) for image-intensive posts. Use it to create a mood board or find inspiration.
  • If you don't have a profile, make one & just play around in Tumblr. It's worth checking out.
  • Share your blog posts to Tumblr - you never know who will re-blog you! (It's like a wild fire over there sometimes.)

Pinterest [my page]

Come back next week.... I have a whole bunch to say about it ♥

Weekend Update.

Monday, October 15, 2012

This weekend started with a hair cut. Which, to go on record, I'll just say it: having your hair did for the weekend may be the best way to guarantee a good weekend. You just feel so good after getting your hair did.

So after that awesome hair did-ing, there was a wine & steak festival going on in Downtown Bryan, so we hopped over there Friday night & watched outdoor 20s movies, ate great street food & I dressed up in my new skirt from A Beautiful Mess's collaboration with Mod Cloth.

And then, as if that wasn't fun enough, I went garage sale-ing on Saturday morning, where I bought frames for a frame wall & proceeded to spray paint them, and then watch the Aggies beat Louisiana Tech barely, at 1 am, after a 5-hour-long-most-stressful-game-ever match up. Whew!

Sunday I definitely had a football hangover. (Which is not to be confused with an alcohol hangover. Very different things.) So we stayed as un-busy as possible. Which meant cooking new things from my new cookbook. (Of which I bought a few extra copies, wink wink)

And that's about all I can say about that. Because, today's my first day of my new job, and I'm super nervous & can't focus on anything.... Eek!

So, I've been somehow successfully keeping a secret....

Friday, October 12, 2012

... but today is a special day & I can finally share the news:

I got a new job!!!

Today is my last day as an Administrative Assistant. On Monday I'll be starting my fancy new job as a Web Communications Specialist. I'll be getting paid to do web stuff. Writing. Editing. Coding. Design. Publishing. Consulting. etc. etc. etc.

I couldn't be more excited!!!

And I lucked out, because I'll still be in the same department at Texas A&M, so I don't have to meet anyone new. I'll already know everyone I'm working with. It may cause a little bit of confusion, but ultimately it makes the job a little less intimidating and I'll be able to jump in faster.

I get my own office, with a window. (Something I've never had before.) A bigger paycheck. (Good for paying off those student loans shopping!) And I'll be getting lots of experience in a field that I'm passionate about.

There's no way I would have been offered this job if I didn't have this blog. It's motivated me, inspired me, and given me real-world experience in web communications. So, thank you for reading & supporting me here. ♥

And now I'm going to go & be giddy all weekend. Monday is a good day for me.

Have a Great Weekend ♥
